Since 2006, New Era Foundation has been organising the Annual Wheelchair Tennis Championships in collaboration with the Nigerian Tennis Federation as a means of providing psycho-social support for the physically challenged.”
This exceptional tournament, first initiated in Nigeria by NEF, has provided an excellent platform for the emergence of many Nigerian Wheelchair Tennis stars, some of whom are now current African Champions. Apart from the cash prizes, participants receive morale-boosting emotional and psychological affirmation of their value as sportsmen (& women), and more importantly, human beings.
Wheelchair Tennis is now being vigorously promoted by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) as a world class sport, with plans for integration with able-bodied tennis wherever possible.
The event is mainly driven by sponsorships. In the past, the Foundation has partnered well-meaning corporate organisations like Yinka Folawiyo and Company and Hi-Media Ltd.
