New Era Foundation as a Non-Governmental Organisation has been involved in the organisation of intellectual, mental and physical competition amongst the younger ones to inculcate in them the culture and habit of healthy rivalry for better performance in order to raise the standard of education in the country. To also make sure that Child Labour and Abuses are reduced to barest minimum if not totally eradicated, NEF has put together a programme to assist youths and women in different categories in order to make sure that the future of humanity is well protected. SPELLING BEE COMPETITION In order to embed in the youth the culture and habit of healthy rivalry for better performance, New Era Foundation has successfully organised consecutively six Spelling Bee Competition since 2001 when the competition was initiated to boost education in the State. The maiden edition of the competition was sponsored by both Hallmark Bank and Citizen Bank for public primary and secondary school respectively. Guaranty Trust Bank took the challenge of sponsoring the 2002 edition alone, while the year 2003 Spelling Bee Competition was sponsored by Eleganza Industries Plc. Sponsorship of the competition has overtime shifted hands from Lagos State Assurance Company Plc (LASACO) in 2004 to Cadbury Nigeria Plc in 2005. Having caught the attention of the State Government, the current and most recent edition of 2006 Spelling Bee Competition was fully sponsored by Lagos State Ministry of Education and was a huge success. NEF/MAGGI JUNIOR CHEF COMPETITION Maggi Junior Chef Competition, which is organised by the New Era Foundation in collaboration with Nestle Nigeria Plc., is aimed at inculcating cooking skills among young persons. In New Era Foundation, it is believed that holistic and wholesome development of youth is not all about formal education but also includes the informal aspects of the process of youth development. This is basically the driving force behind the Maggi Junior Chef competition. The first edition of the competition was held in year 2005, 25 successful contestants out of 258 entries participated in the semi finals held at Eko FM Ground,Agidingbi while the 10 successful contestants who emerged at the semi finals proceeded to the finals which was held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island. Valuable prizes won by contestants include a laptop computer and one hundred thousand naira for the first prize, a laptop and fifty thousand naira for the second prize and a laptop and twenty-five thousand naira for the third prize as well as other consolation prizes. The Year 2006 edition of the NEF/Maggi Junior Chef Competition started with collection of over 2,200 valid entries from all the 57 Local Government areas in Lagos State. 24 successful entries were selected by experienced judges to participating in the semi finals stage held on April 27th and May 2nd 2006 respestively for the two zones of 12 participants at the Eko FM ground,Agindingbi Ikeja. The theme for this year's competition was "Beans Cooking Can Be Fun". Ten (10) successful contestants emerge from the 24 semi finalist to participate in the Grand Finale which took place on the 10th of May 2006 at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. The 2006 edition of NEF/Maggi Junior Chef Competition came with a different twist as Master Abdul-Kareem Kahinde,a 15years old student of International School Lagos emerged winner of the day with his mouth watering dish of "Beizzamag" ercipe.Master Abdul-Kareemwent home with a Lap Top Computer, Printer,and a Blender/Mixer and 100,000 as 1st Position winner, the 2nd Position went to Miss. Amusan B. Bisola, who won for herself a Lap Top computer, Printer, a set of Sauce pans and the sum of N50,000 while the 3rd winner Miss.went with a Laptop Computer, Printer,and a Blender/mixer and N25,000. There were Consolation prizes for other contestants and thir various schools in order to encourage them. HIV/AIDS ADVOCACY PROGRAMME FOR YOUTHS: New Era Foundation was selected as one of the youth oriented non governmental organization by Aids Prevention initiated in Nigeria and coordinated by Lagos State HIV/AIDS Foundation, enlightening the youths on the dangers of the killer diseases HIV/AIDS. For the past two years, over 3000 teachers have benefited from this programme called Train the Trainer Workshop for Teacher in Lagos State. These teachers then further trained students in their schools on HIV/AIDS Pandemic. In year 2005 New Era Foundation was also selected by Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) to benefit from the World Bank HIV/AIDS Development Project. In the programme, NEF organised a 2 Day ICC and BCC Training Workshop for 342 opinion leaders in four (4) categories.
